Database Administrator - IMS, DB2, Oracle
Position Particpates in bonus incentive plan of up to 25%
Job Summary:
Administers and controls data resources; designs data base structure; implements and maintains physical data bases; performs tuning/capacity planning for data base management system resource usage; and supports proper utilization of the data base management software product(s) (IMS, DB2, & Oracle) and associated products for data and data base administration at the customer level. Coordinates physical changes to computer data bases; codes, tests, and implements physical data base.
Accountabilities:
1. Reviews logical design and designs physical data bases or reviews description of changes to data base design to understand how changes to be made affect physical data base (how data is stored in terms of physical characteristics such as location, amount of space, and access method).
2. Defines, implements and maintains the physical representations of logical data base structures for operational and DSS data bases.
3. Calculates optimum values for data base parameters and data capacity.
4. Conducts problem identification and resolution of data base management system related problems, by monitoring and prioritizing proactive, corrective measures to prevent data base problems or shut downs.
5. Directs programmers and analysts to make changes to program call patterns in order to maximize performance. Reviews and corrects program access codes.
6. Determines impacts of data base changes on other systems and staff cost for making changes to data base.
7. Modifies data base programs to increase processing performance, referred to as performance tuning.
8. Provides support for the user community and computer operations personnel in the day-to-day operation and usage of DB2, IMS, and Oracle data bases.
9. Provides technical guidance to Information Systems personnel in the investigation, analysis and resolution of data base problems.
10. Develops and tests data base backup and recovery plans and ensures that they provide an adequate level of protection in case of data base problems that are managed and supported on a day-to-day basis by Operations.
11. Defines and designs physical relational data structures, which requires understanding data usage requirements and needs as well as working with applications programming. Needs and requirements must then be built into a company data base architecture.
12. Administers DB2 internal security (non-ACF2) so as not to adversely impact users.
13. Evaluates and recommends software and hardware data base solutions.
14. Performs analysis, feasibility studies and vendor comparisons in the areas of data warehouse and data base administration.
15. Performs project leadership roles on Electronic Data Management related projects.
16. Insures that all changes are documented and follow standard change control procedures.
Required Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, and five (5) to seven (7) years of database administration experience. If no degree, then nine (9) years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate strong knowledge in the following areas:
data base design
file access methods
data standards
data control and security
backup and recovery issues associated with data base platforms.
IMS, Oracle, and DB2 data base systems and relational data base systems in general.
2. Knowledge of operating system software including MVS/ESA, JES2, DFSMS, CICS, ACF2, RMF, TSO/E, ISPF, Unix, Windows and Windows NT.
3. Knowledge of JCL and computer programming languages including COBOL.
4. Ability to prepare written documentation of procedures and technical matters.
